Customer questions and answers for Garmin Edge 800 GPS with Cadence and Heart Rate

Question

Can the Edge 800 be used on more than one bike?

ie can I purchase the bike sensors separately, and mount them on a different bike - and then swap the Garmin between them, at the same time storing the data for each bike. I have a road and a mountain bike and their exercise and travel profiles are very different.

Yes,
You just have to set the cadence / speed sensor up to the Edge (easy).
Before riding, select which bike you are using, the sensor is detected automatically and off you go!

I posted the original question so am updating my response. I have now managed to get this working with both the supplied ANT sensor and the Bontrager duotrap on my Trek road bike - so am very happy!

Thanks for the replies.

Yes this can be used on multiple bikes, I have two mounts and two cadence sensors and it works perfectly. It supports upto 3 bikes I believe.

After you power on the Garmin simply press the power button once quickly and you can then select which bike profile you wish to use

I've just bought the silicone case to give better protection from the odd knock. Just make sure that the unit's rubber covers are seated correctly to keep out the rain and crud.

It comes with a good mounting system, with mounts for 2 bikes.
You could get a case for carrying it around in your pocket, to protect the screen.

Would you mount an iphone on the handlebars?
iphone battery runs out fast when logging GPS and screen on.
You might need a bluetooth heartrate strap.

For occasional use logging trips or navigating, the iphone is great.
For regular use and training, nothing beats a dedicated tool.

It is better to have a deticated unit as there is more functionality and batteries running low on charge are less of an issue.

Question

Are the ascent/descent data reliable?

I previously used an altimeter which used a barometer and showed stupidly large ascents and descents, even when it was stationary on my desk. Presumably the Edge uses GPS; do people finde the data credible?

The Garmin uses barometric pressure for altitude measurements.
Garmin claim that this is more accurate than GPS altitude. I have other Garmin units and a Polar which also use pressure measurement and they have always worked to an acceptable accuracy.
The only noteworthy points I can think of are:-
Set up the altitude reference to your actual altitude before you start off, that will give you the best accuracy.
Bear in mind that if a weather front comes through, the altitude will be adversely affected.

answer 2
This is the responce on the Garmin website FAQ .
Garmin does not publish an accuracy for the barometric pressure sensor. Garmin does publish the accuracy of the barometric altimeter readout. The accuracy is published as 10 feet with proper calibration.
Proper calibration is obtained by either inputting a known elevation, or by inputting a normalized air pressure. One could then infer from the accuracy of the altitude that the barometer would be accurate to one thousandth of an inch of mercury. The device will only display up to the hundredths of an inch of mercury.
Garmin's devices are designed as recreational GPS devices, as an aid to navigation. They should not be used for any activity requiring precise measurements such as surveying or weather prediction.
