answer 1
Yes, it works really well. I have the OS Maps.
What I like is that in "car mode" it shows you the driving view you might see in a car, then when you get to turns, it flicks to a 2D top down view, which is very useful particularly when negotiating round abouts and more complex turns.
Garmin's background in car satnav's is there to see.
Note however in regards post code searches in London at least in my experience, it does not understand the entire post code, just the first phrase and then the first letter of the 2nd phrase, e.g.
EC2M 4AA would be EC2M 4, and then it will ask you the street address and street name. This is a bit irritating to be honest.
I am unsure if this is peculiarity to Garmin satnav devices generally, or a quirk in the OS Maps.

The Edge 800 can definitely be used like any other sat nav and will find locations using addresses and postcodes. In addition to this depending on what maps you use it will also give you a list of local services such as schools, hospitals, restaurants etc. The on road guidance is great although in my view it would be good if some of the maps could route designated cycle paths both on and off road. When navigating off road it does not route an off-road track but instead will guide you to a point directly, however the 1:50K maps mean its pretty easy to navigate routes yourself as these will be marked as bridal ways exactly the same as a paper map. If you did want the GPS to guide you a long a specific off-road route then you can create a route using Garmin's free Base Camp software.
