I asked Datatag about this. Here is their reply:

:------------------

The police have to suspect a bike is stolen and then scan it to find out it is stolen if relying on the RFID tags embedded within each machine.

Each bike system comes with a number of ultra destruct labels which cannot be removed without damaging the bike - so they are a good 'indicator' of something suspicious.

Essentially, the police have to find suspicious bikes and then decide if they are stolen using either of the above.

Likely hood of a successful recovery depends on the type of bike, where it was stolen from and when.

So, a commuter bike stolen in a city may be difficult to find but a more sporty bike, especially a higher end MTB (Mountain Bike) or road bike may be easier as it may be used at the local MTB venue or, if a race bike, local race circuit or bikers haunt. All the owner has to do is pay a visit and see if he can spot something 'like' his bike then see if he can spot the marks where labels have been removed etc.

I think it uses RFID, or a similar sort of technology, so that when it passes near a police scanner, or police car it will give off a signal which will alert the police to the bike being stolen.

answer 3
It's not a lock. It's a small device, the size of a rice grain, that you can attach with supplied special glue to a hidden place of your bike and will emit a signal detected by a reader.

You need to send a registration form by post and they will write you back once the device's serial number is registered to you

The transmitter is about 10mm long by 3mm in diameter. It is fitted inside the frame by use of a 2 component glue (supplied). The transmitter is used purely as a means of identification by transmitting a continuous signal which is decoded by a police-owned reading device. It can not be used to trace missing bikes. Datatag told me the transmitter does not stop transmitting with age.

Question

Only for carbon frames?

Your description says " Suitable for use with carbon frames ".
Does this mean it's only suitable for carbon frames, or can it be used with steel or alloy frames also?

No blockage. I fitted one to an aluminium frame and one to a steel frame. The fitting instructions do not identify and unsuitable frames.

Question

What's the difference between this item and the ImmobiTag Electronic Cycle Protection which I have found on Halfords for £14.99?

The Immobitag is attached to a star nut, it is driven into your bike's seat tube using your seatpost. A thief could eaisly find this tag and with a long drill bit or other tools remove it, although this would not be easy.

This product is glued in and ,as some reviewers have commented is very small. you could glue it anywhere in your bikes frame... making it much harder for a thief to discover its location and remove it.
